Some History about Pigeon Island, St. Lucia

Pigeon Island has been the stronghold of pirates, barracks for soldiers, a whaling station, a private residence and a yachtsmen's haven. It was leased to the St Lucia National Trust on November 15th 1983 and was made St Lucia's first National Landmark. The National Trust is responsible for the upkeep and restoration of the existing buildings.

Admiral Rodney used the Island as his naval headquarters, from where he sailed his fleet to intercept the French fleet and defeat Admiral de Grasse at the "Battle of the Saints" in 1782.

Today the landmark attracts many visitors from St Lucia and overseas. It provides a relaxed environment to explore, hike or swim. There is a small Interpretation Centre with a history of the Island. The Captain's Cellar Pub is situated below this Centre.

Pigeon Island was connected to the main land in 1972 by the causeway, where Sandals Grande is sited. Each year in May, Pigeon Island hosts the last 4 days of the Jazz Festival.

Our building was the original Captain's Cellar. It was used to store provisions for the Officers and Men, as all year round there is a cooling breeze inside the Captain's Cellar Pub. It is thought that the Captain's Cellar Pub has a Ghost or two. Why not come along to find out for yourself?
